Sarasotan Jerry Dunn was running barefoot decades before barefoot running became a thing. In 1975, while working as a waiter in Key West, his girlfriend’s lifeguard brother would yell, “You should be a runner!” every time he saw the tall, lanky Dunn saunter onto Siesta Key Beach. Without missing a beat, the 29-year-old would shout back, “I didn’t run in high school! I’m not an athlete! I tried running in Basic Training, and I hated it!” But one day, the lifeguard convinced the veteran to jog a half mile along the edge of the sea. It felt so good that Dunn started running every day on the beach. “I was barefoot the whole first two years of my running career,” he says. When the Sarasota Herald Tribune held its first road 10K, Dunn bought himself his first pair of running shoes and finished in 69 minutes. He’s been running pretty much ever since, forging a lifestyle, career, mindset, and even a new line of CBD products around the sport. Dunn has completed hundreds of 26.2-milers, earning him the nickname “Marathon Man.” Running has strengthened his body and eased his brain, which he says “can get addicted to things,” and has become his way of connecting with the world. Earning The Title When Dunn started running, he was a functioning alcoholic who could get up, go to work, have a relationship, and train for races. “I went on like that for the next six years, until I got the ‘How good could I be at running?’ bug,” he says. That thought, coupled with getting as drunk as he’d ever been on his 37th birthday was a turning point. He quit shotgunning Budweisers and start piling on more miles. He’d already realized he had an aptitude for marathons, but now that drinking was no longer holding him back, he took a stab at ultramarathons (runs longer than 26.2 miles). He quickly discovered he excelled in them. In 1985, Dunn did his first multiday run, to benefit Habitat for Humanity. He ran 50 miles a day for three days straight across the state of South Dakota. “Six years later, Habitat was turning 15, and I thought, ‘You’ve run across one state; why not run shore-to-shore in 104 days?’” he says. He did, running from San Francisco to Washington, DC. Technically he didn’t run all the way to Atlantic surf, but “the shores of the Potomac are [in DC] so, so what?” he says. Afterward, he read that the most marathons anyone had completed in one year was 89. “So I said, ‘Let me do 93 in ’93.” Halfway into his quest, he received an email from a runner who’d done 101 marathons in a year. “I was already in the habit of running two marathons a weekend,” Dunn says. So, he simply added a few more to his lineup, and he broke the record. In early 1995, at age 50, Dunn realized the 100th running of the Boston Marathon was that year, so—what else?—he ran the marathon course 25 times in the days leading up to it, culminating with a 26th running on race day (a total of 681.2 miles.) In 1998, he went to New York City, got a room at the Westside YMCA, and ran the original NYC Marathon course, through Central Park, 28 times in the 28 days before the city’s 29th marathon (and yes, he ran that one too). Then, in 2000, Dunn set off on his biggest, wildest challenge yet. On his way out of NYC two years prior, the ESPN2 host Keith Olbermann had asked him, “What next?” “I’m not sure,” Dunn had said. “But the turn of the century is coming up. I’ll probably figure out something outrageous that’s never been done before.” He launched that effort—running 200 marathons in one calendar year—in 2000. He missed the mark, only completing 186. For the next decade, he let people believe he’d done all 200—a lie of omission—but he finally set the record straight. “I’m an ethical person. I don’t deceive people,” he says. “To come clean was a refreshing feeling, and it got me back to being real and who I am.” The Green Miles Ever since Dunn put a cork in his drinking and all through the years of running—and, later, producing marathons and ultras—he’s tapped into the benefits of cannabis to enhance his body, brain, outlook, and spirit. “I’ve been using cannabis for 48 years, and I drank for 25 years. I’m throwing my history into the arena about the evils of alcohol compared to the not-so-evils of cannabis. When I was drinking, alcohol consumed me and ruined one of my marriages. With weed, my good vibe is just enhanced and I’m more creative. Plus, everything from Advil to narcotic pain killers are known to be bad for the body, but cannabis does what those do and more and it’s not addictive.” As for the two most well-known compounds in weed—THC and CBD—Dunn says, “Back in the day, I smoked to get stoned. Now, a little THC puts me in a creative mood, and CBD basically gives a boost to [my runner’s high]. It’s a little supercharger of those effects, including the psychological and the physiological.” Dunn is embarking on his next ultra-mileage adventure on 4-20-2020. He’ll road bike and run the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway Trail, from Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida. His other motto is “Know Yourself,” and he’s adopting this challenge knowing that, at 74, his body might want to ride a bit more than run. His current plan is to ride 30 miles and run 10 per day. Jerry Dunn, 57, plans to run a marathon each of the next 20 days, beginning today, to promote physical fitness among Coloradans. Dunn, nicknamed "America's Marathon Man," is in Colorado to run "a marathon a day" for 20 consecutive days. His trek begins today in Colorado Springs and comes to Pueblo on Saturday. Jerry Dunn, 57, plans to run a marathon each of the next 20 days, beginning today, to promote physical fitness among Coloradans. A self-described "entrepreneurial adventurer," Dunn, who lives in Spearfish, S.D., is helping promote the fitness campaign Accelerade Colorado, an effort to motivate the state's residents to become more physically fit. The campaign has a Web site, www.accelerade-, that offers fitness tips and lists of the best places in Colorado to get fit (none of which is in the Pueblo area). This isn't the first time in 27 years of running that Dunn has attempted multiple marathons. In 1991, he ran from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., essentially running 26 miles a day for the entire summer, he said. In 1993, he ran a marathon every Saturday and Sunday for the entire year. And in 1996, he ran the Boston Marathon route 26 days in a row to celebrate that event's 100th anniversary. His Accelerade Colorado campaign will differ from those ventures; his route will be determined by the locations of a city's 7-Eleven stores - the exclusive Colorado retailer for Accelerade. Dunn has used that brand of sports drink since it was developed, and he will visit every 7-Eleven store in the cities he visits, mapping out a 26-mile course for each day. "It's not like I'm toeing the line and seeing how fast I can run 26 miles," Dunn said Sunday. "I do stop quite a bit. It usually takes five or six hours to run the distance." Unlike some athletes, the energetic 57-year-old said he isn't particularly strict about what he consumes - other than always drinking Accelerade. "I don't have a real regimented diet . . . I burn up whatever I put in there, so I eat whatever I want, pretty much," he said. He agreed to do the Colorado promotion because of his commitment to fitness and belief in Accelerade, which adds protein and minerals to the usual sports-drink ingredients. "I know it's one of the reasons I can do what I do," he said. Dunn will begin his Pueblo run at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the 7-Eleven at Elizabeth Street and U.S. 50. "I encourage everyone to come out and run or walk with me for a while," he said. "I run at about a 10-minute (per mile) pace. I'm eager to have company."

Jerry Dunn started running 20 years ago to show up some friends who challenged him to hit the road. He didn't even own the right pair of shoes, so he ran barefoot along the beaches in Sarasota, Fla., where he worked as a lifeguard. But there was more to Dunn's burgeoning avocation than just proving something to his friends. Dunn, 49, who grew up in Indianapolis, was seeking refuge from the demons of alcoholism and substance abuse. "My father died of a heart attack when I was 18 years old. He was 47. Running very quickly became my addiction," says Dunn, who now lives in Black Hills, S.D., where he works as a self-employed massage therapist. If running became part of his salvation, it quickly transformed his life, as Dunn raised his involvement to an almost Zenlike realm of purity, grace and intense concentration. "I'm not one of those people whose entire life revolves around running, but it's pretty close," he admits. He has the right body, standing 6 feet and weighing 150 pounds with body fat of less than 6 percent. When the LaSalle Banks Chicago Marathon starts Sunday at 7:45 a.m., Dunn will be one of the faces in the crowd, one of an anticipated 13,000 athletes who will run the 26.2-mile course. Dunn knows he doesn't have a chance at the $250,000 in prize money that is likely to be won by such elite athletes as Steve Jones, Kristy Johnston and Kim Jones. Dunn realized when he started running that his strength was long-distance and stamina, not turning out fast times. He ran his fastest time (3 hours 23 minutes) here in 1985. But for Dunn, time is immaterial. "I'm a blue-collar runner," he says. "I'm very efficient, not very fast. My role models are those people who spend four or five hours and don't get the recognition. I met a woman who is 88 and she didn't start running until she was 70. Those people are my inspiration." The Chicago Marathon has a deep resonance for Dunn, who considers it his hometown race because Indianapolis doesn't have a marathon. Within the ritualized, obsessive inner circle of marathon runners, Dunn has carved out his niche literally as a marathon man. Dunn said his running of the Chicago Marathon in 1993 was the 88th time in that calendar year that he ran a marathon course. By the end of the year, Dunn had run an astonishing 104 marathon courses. Before 1993, Dunn had only run in 11 marathons. To reach 1993's staggering total, Dunn ran 23 marathons and then ran the same route the next day. Five times he ran a marathon and repeated the course run in the next two days. Dunn accomplished that feat by eschewing running during the week and running only the marathon courses. Since 1993, Dunn has changed his running patterns, logging about 80 to 100 training miles a week and running many fewer marathon courses. This year, for example, he will run fewer than 10 marathons. But there was a psychological underpinning to 1993. Dunn was 47 at the time he broke the record, the same age that his father was when he died. Dunn has already shown a peculiar knack for laying out overwhelming challenges and somehow overcoming them. In 1991, long before "Forrest Gump" detonated onto the scene, Dunn ran from San Francisco to Washington D.C. in 3 1/2 months (an average of six marathons a week) to raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity, an open-housing advocate group. Another time, Dunn ran more than 200 miles across Colorado to raise money for homeless shelters. Next March, Dunn will attempt his greatest feat. In celebration of the 100th running of the Boston Marathon, Dunn says he will run the course route 25 consecutive days leading up to the official race. Dunn has even found a way to deflate the seriousness and inject some irony into what he does. In January, during the running of the Disney World Marathon in Florida, he married his fourth wife, Elaine Doll, who is also a marathoner.

Jerry Dunn has made a name for himself as a marathoner. And he’s one who’s enthusiastic about marijuana.

Running is an activity you either love or hate. For some, it’s a transcendental experience often compared to meditation. For others, it triggers avoidant behavior in the psyche—and somehow enhances the appeal of Netflix and pizza to a level in which excuses are disguised as logic. But not for Jerry Dunn, America’s Marathon Man. At 72-years-old, Dunn’s completed a total of 400 marathons, dating back to 1982. He ran 60 miles when he turned 60-years-old, and then ran 65 miles when he turned 65. Guess what he did when he turned 70? Yep, you guessed it: he ran 70 kilometers. In 1993, the Indianapolis native ran 104 marathons, breaking the previously held record of 101 marathons in a year. To celebrate the millennium, Dunn ran 200 marathons that year. And, on the 25 days leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Boston Marathon, he ran 26 consecutive marathons to celebrate the renowned race. Tell us who else—let alone a 72-year-old—has accomplished this much in their lifetime? He’s earned the title of “America’s Marathon Man”. He oozes youthful energy, a likely side effect of his superior cardiovascular health. He speaks intellectually about life, drawing philosophical parallels between running and the lessons people are intrinsically designed to learn throughout their journeys. Dunn talks about the sport the way an artist explains a creative process: an activity that pulls them into another world. He doesn’t just pursue running with passion—he’s also figured out a way to ingrain his personality into the sport. He ran across the country to raise awareness for Habitat for Humanity—a non-profit he full-heartedly believes in. But on a smaller, less serious scale, Dunn’s run marathons in a full-jester costume, high-fiving kids on porches as he runs by. He’s also hauled ass to cross finish lines to then suit up in a tuxedo and shake hands and cheer-on his fellow marathoners as they complete their runs. “Running is my art,” he says. “And I just want to impassion and entertain people through it.” In conjunction with being an ultra-marathoner, Dunn’s also a cannabis advocate. He’s been using cannabis for nearly 50 years and is living proof that the stigma is unfounded. And, like many Baby Boomers, Dunn’s also a veteran. So his connection to the plant is layered, as he represents multiple communities within the cannabis space. High Times: What have long-distance running and cannabis done for your life? Jerry Dunn: I drank for 25 years and was pretty much a functional alcoholic. I still had a real job, but was unfulfilled. Then I started doing all these crazy running things, which shifted my headspace. When I ran across the country the last time, I was out in the desert and I had this epiphany: running saved me from alcoholism. I realized it didn’t matter why I was pursuing all these running expeditions and marathons. I had this moment where I was like, ‘all you need to do, Jerry, is keep running.’ And I did. I got heavily involved in the running industry and created four running events in South Dakota: two marathons and two ultra marathons. So I took that message seriously and have pretty much not strayed from it. I built a life and a career around running. My life has gotten a lot better in the last 35 years since I stopped consuming alcohol and continue to use cannabis. High Times: Getting a lot of physical activity is a great way for people to move through their addictions. Why do you think that is? JD: I think it’s a couple of things. I think it brings discipline into your life because most addicts aren’t very disciplined. So if you commit to doing something three, four, five days a week, it brings that component of discipline into your sphere, and that translates into something you’re in charge of. Then there’s the physical part, which starts changing your body and mind. But I don’t think running is the only answer. There are other forms of exercise and activity that will help with the process of changing your lifestyle and habits. High Times: Why did you choose running as your art? JD: I often tell people that running is a childlike activity. When we were young and free and didn’t have the adult world to deal with, part of our play would be to run. Just run. And I think that our bodies when we start running kind of flip back or at least allow us to think about our youth, or kind of connect with that free childlike feeling. I like being in that spot. And I can only get there when I’m running. Plus, you’re also outside in nature and away from everything. That also plays into it for me. High Times: How has cannabis played into that? JD: I think cannabis enhances the ability to channel that childlike freedom. It’s a psychotropic plant and it does things to the brain and mind that takes you out of your default thinking pattern. It allows you to see possibilities and see things from a different perspective. High Times: How has cannabis impacted your athletic career? JD: It’s enhanced my ability to imagine things. For example, the idea to run across the United States may have come to me in one of those thoughtfully creative moments. Cannabis has given me the ability to take on and pursue goals that normally seem impossible. It’s allowed me to come up with ideas for marathons. It’s given me the ability to think beyond the bounds of tasks that seem impossible. I’ve been using cannabis for over 40 years. Learning to think creatively and allowing your imagination to flow is a byproduct, I think, of cannabis use. When you learn to think outside the box, it becomes habitually available. Cannabis opens the mind’s ability to do that. In order to ever really achieve anything, you have to be able to envision it first. High Times: The stigma still very much exists for athletes and those who are involved in sports. Has it been hard for you to talk about using cannabis? JD: I’ve actually only recently come out. I was what you call a ‘closet smoker’ because I didn’t think it was cool to talk about it. And on all these other runs and events I’ve done and hosted, including the run across the United States, I didn’t even think about talking about it. It just wasn’t acceptable. But it’s easier now that things are different in culture and society. I went to the US Trail Running Conference, and while at lunch talking to people the topic of cannabis came up and I mentioned that I wanted to do another transcontinental run to raise awareness around the benefits of cannabis and disprove the stigma. A man who works for one of the major companies in the running industry was also at the table. He’s also a lifelong runner and has participated in a few 100-mile events. He said it’s not uncommon for him at 70-miles to sit down and use some cannabis because he’s hurting and sore. It relieves some of the mental stress and physical pain. Just being able to have that conversation was amazing. It wouldn’t have happened even three years ago. I know I’m going to get flack from some people in the running industry that are opposed to this. But I don’t care. I think everybody should have access to cannabis for a variety of reasons. High Times: Part of what makes you so interesting is that you don’t just appeal to professional athletes. You also appeal to baby boomers and veterans. Can you go into that a bit? JD: My target markets for what I’m doing is my generation: boomers and veterans. There’s a study that’s ongoing at the University of Colorado, and the premise of the study is about who the new cannabis users are since legalization– and the answer is Baby Boomers. We’re the largest, growing demographic of cannabis users in the U.S. I can speak authoritatively about living through the Reefer Madness era and Nancy Reagan’s ‘Just Say No’ war. Baby boomers aren’t using cannabis to get high. They’re using it to find relief from Alzheimer’s, arthritis pain, and so much more. More people 50-years-old and wiser need to use cannabis instead of the heavy, dangerous pharmaceuticals doctors prescribe. High Times: And you are a veteran? JD: Yes. And cannabis is one of the best medications for PTSD. I live three blocks from the VA Hospital in South Dakota, which was built in the early part of the 20th century. And it was designed specifically to deal with the mental issues of returning vets. South Dakota is not a legal state, mind you. Veterans go into an eight-week program, they get clean and sober, and they come back into the real world. And the majority of them relapse and go back to using whatever substances they got addicted to deal with their PTSD. Why? Because at all of the 171 medical centers; 700 outpatient, community, and outreach clinics; 126 nursing home care units; and 35 domiciliaries, they are never given the opportunity to see if medicinal marijuana will be effective in treating their problems. Our federal laws don’t allow it. So is it the “best care available?” I don’t think so. We veterans were told we would be taken care of if we gave service to our country But that has never been the case. Besides the boomers and the old people needing to know that it’s okay to feel better through cannabis, we need to take car better care of our veterans than what we’re currently doing. Especially where I’m from, I don’t think many veterans even know that cannabis can be used in a way that’s more than just getting high. I don’t think they understand cannabis can be used medicinally and therapeutically. My mission is to provide some inspiration to lead a more active lifestyle and to educate people about the use of marijuana in the 21st century.
