Looking back over 49 years of a running lifestyle

America's Marathon Man looking back over 49 years of running

Years '75 to '91 to be posted at a future time.

1991 - I created a benefit run for Habitat for Humanity titled Shore to Shore in 104. It consisted of a marathon a day, 6 days a week for 15 weeks, which got me from San Francisco to DC in 104 days. It took 50,000+ miles of both training and competitive miles. I was rewarded with a personal audience with President Jimmy Carter.

1993 – I ran 104 marathon distances many of wwhich were on official marathon courses. breaking  the existing world record of 101.

1996 – I ran the Boston Marathon course  every morning for the 25 days prior to the 100th running of the Boston Marathon.  Next day I ran the Run Of The Century, the 100th Boston. Thus completing my Marathon of Marathons.....my way of celebrating this historic evert.

1997 – Ran the LA Marathon for 14 days straight prior to the 15th anniversary of the Los Angeles Marathon.

1998 – Again, ran 15 days in a row for the LA Marathon before running the race for its 16th anniversary.

1998 – I ran the original course of the NYC Marathon in Central Park for the 28 days prior to 29th anniversary.  A new PR.....29 marathons in 29 days.

200 in 2000 – As a way of CHALLNENGING MY LIMITS, I set out  to run 200  IN 2000. Myfastest time  was the HOPS Marathon By Tampa Bay in 4:05:30. While I fell short of my goal of 200, I still completed 186 marathons, all on official marathon courses.... at the age 54.

2006 – I did a Dave McGillivray and ran 60 miles on my 60th birthday, helping to get a climbing wall for The Spearfish Middle School.

2007 – I  was awarded the Special Achievement Award from South Dakota's Black Hills, Badlands & Lakes Association for increased tourism dollar generated by The Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon. And for bringing national acclaim and thousands of runners to The Black Hills of South Dakota.

2011 – I ran 65 miles on his 65th birthday.

2016 – I became a septegenarion this year and decided 70 kilometers sounded more doable than 70 miles.

YEARS  '17 TO THE PRESENT COMING SOON

Events Created

After the 200 in 2000 project's completion, i directed my passion for running into a new arena andcreated four events in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

In 2002, I created my first event, The Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon. The entire course is run on the George Mickelson Trail    Runners  World called it "The best kept secret in marathon running".  Mostly because of the beauty of the course.

II followed this up with the Lean Horse Ultra Marathon, also along the Mickelson Trail, which saw its Inaugural race in 2005.

In 2010,  Emily Schultz and I created The Run Crazy Horse 26.2 ~ 13.1. to their growing portfolio of events.

2016  I was consultant to Charon Geigle in the creation of Wheelin' To Wall.  The 1st event ever in The Badlands National Park

Philanthropic Work

  • 1989 -  My 1st multi-day....from Illinois border east to the Ohio border across my home state of Indiana.  Habitat for Humanity was beneficiary of funds raised.
  • 1991 – For their 15 Year Anniversary Building campaign, I did a benefit run for Habitat for Humanity titled Shore to Shore in 104.  It consisted of a marathon a day, 6 days a week for 15 weeks from San Fran to D C
  • 2016 – Dunn raised money for the Special Olympics through my "70 at 70" fundraiser.

Cannabis Advocacy

I continue to advocate for the legalization cannabis, both medical and adult use. I am a Vet and I believe that medicinal marijuana should be an option for our vets because of it's proven effectiveness in dealing with PTSD and other mental conditions.

I also  advocate for the use of cannabis for endurance athletes.
