As runners, we are a tribe. We share a common experience. We have common goals. We have mutual respect for one another. Some humans in our tribe run like the wind…..we applaud them. Some of our brothers and sisters walk more than they run…..we respect, and applaud them as well. The elders of our clan are held in high regard for their commitment to continue on…..leading by example. The young in our midst are encouraged to grow and learn. Everyone in our family is a winner. Every one to cross the line is crowned a winner. All of us accomplishing what we set out to do that day.
Our tribe has no ethnic, political or religious requirements or restrictions. We are one. We RUN.
We look at the person running next to us and see a sister or a brother, another human being……nothing more, nothing less. As we look at them, we smile. We offer a word of encouragement. We want them to succeed. We want them to be proud of what they have accomplished that day. We run with a single purpose….to finish what we came to do.
We come together in the early morning determined, focused and ready to have a good time. A common goal, and we do whatever we can to help each other finish the day with a medal…..and more.
So remember………..We RUN as ONE.
We’re not elite…..nor are we fleet.
We’re not all racers…... more like pacers.
The thing for us, is long, slow distance,
Which marries well, with our persistence.
We live to run, but not too fast,
But even so, we’re seldom last.
We cruise along, at our own speed
Rarely thinking, of the lead.
The joy for us is just to run,
And better yet, is to be done.
The finish line is just the same
For runners fast and runners lame
The prize is ours, just past that line
Evoking tears, almost every time.
“We’ve conquered more than twenty-six-two
you’re part of me…I’m part of you.”
